New Essay by Takeshi Suzuki

We are happy to announce a new essay, “Parsons Reloaded: Symbolic Order and Sociological Futures” by Takeshi Suzuki in The Theory of Action and the Future of Sociology, edited by Helmut Staubmann and published by Innsbruck University Press.

“Sociology, at its best, has always been an inquiry conducted in the shadow of crisis. Each generation of sociologists has confronted moments when the symbolic foundations of order seemed to tremble – wars, depressions, revolutions, pandemics – and has sought to find within these fractures not only explanations but also horizons of renewal. To practice sociology is, in this sense, to practice hope: to insist that meaning, order, and solidarity remain thinkable even when they appear broken. From its beginnings, sociology has carried this double movement of despair and reconstruction. Max Weber wrote in the aftermath of disenchantment; Karl Mannheim tried to rescue the utopian imagination from ideological distortion; George Herbert Mead turned everyday interaction into a micro-laboratory of democratic possibility. What unites these otherwise disparate traditions is a refusal to accept social breakdown as final. They teach us that knowledge itself can be an act of moral repair – a reorganization of perception through which new forms of solidarity become visible.”
